Types of Work Permit

Employer Specific Work Permit

An Employer Specific Work Permit set outs terms and conditions for your stay in Canada as a worker which typically includes, the name of your employer, duration of employment and location where you can work. Usually, an applicant must have positive Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) from the Canadian employer who wants to employ them. LMIA must be approved by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) which verifies that there is necessity of foreign worker.

Open Work Permit

Open work permit is NOT employer or Occupation specific in Canada. You will not need the following when you apply for your work permit:

  • a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) from Employment and Social Development Canada, or
  • proof that an employer has submitted an offer of employment through the Employer Portal and paid the employer compliance fee

Post Graduate Open Work Permit

Have no record of any criminal activity and submit a police clearance certificate as proof

Documents required to apply for Canada work permit

A valid passport with a validity of more than 6 months from the planned date of arrival in Canada.
Two recent passport-sized photographs
Educational qualification certificates
Proof of professional qualifications, including work experience
Medical examination required to be done from registered hospitals.
